Shattered Pixel Dungeon: why permadeath makes it worth learning

A roguelike that refuses to let you grind past your mistakes, and is better for it.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon: why permadeath makes it worth learning

Most mobile roguelikes soften permadeath with some form of permanent progression. Shattered Pixel Dungeon largely does not, and that decision shapes everything else about it.

Knowledge is the only thing you keep

Each run drops you into a freshly generated dungeon with unidentified potions and scrolls. Drink the wrong thing on floor two and the run is over. What carries forward is not gear but understanding: which items are worth testing early, when a class ability is better saved, how far you can push before resting.

The classes change the opening, not the ending

Five heroes are available, and each changes how the first few floors play rather than granting a straightforward power advantage. A Warrior's early durability buys different mistakes than a Mage's ranged pressure.

Who it suits

If you want a game that respects a fifteen-minute session and punishes autopilot, this is one of the strongest free options on Android. If you want steady visible progress every time you play, it will frustrate you.

It is open source under GPL-3.0 and still actively developed. The download on its page here points at the official F-Droid listing.
